Helen Flockhart: Linger Awhile

Friday 12 October 2018 to Sunday 20 January 2019

Helen Flockhart has built a reputation as one of the finest and most distinctive Scottish artists of her generation.  From the beginning of her career Helen has drawn her creative inspiration from a range of esoteric and mythical sources and developed a distinctive style.  Lush foliage with intricately painted patterns of decorative design often serves as the backdrop to figures and animals.  Heavy with references to myths, legends and literature, the works are suspended in the moment, forever waiting for a witness to peek in.  They are masterfully painted, impeccable compositions with fluid and ripe narratives.

Helens new body of work takes as its starting point the study of Mary Queen of Scots and her fascination with the way gender determined events in her life and, ultimately, history.

Born in Scotland, she graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1985. Since then she has built a formidable reputation through numerous exhibitions in Britain, Europe and America.  Her work is held in several private, corporate and public collections, including the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, the Scottish Arts Council and the Fleming Collection of Scottish Art, London.

"As with the art of Paul Klee, Helen Flockhart's paintings reveal a world of alluring, strange beauty which, for those of us who enter, can disturb, enthral and yet console our distracted lives in these troubled times."  Bill Hare, 2011, Honorary Teaching Fellow in Modern and Contemporary Scottish Art, The University of Edinburgh.
